Man appears in court after fatal hit and run

A 31yr old man appeared in court in tears after being accused of killing Mark Batty by Dangerous and other charges.

Anton Watson has appeared at Grimsby Magistrates were he is charged with being the suspected driver of the Red Ford Focus which hit Mark Batty and left him to die in the middle of the road.

The court heard police officers had found Mark unresponsive in the middle of Scartho Road after a collision with a car which failed to stop at the scene.

Mark was pronounced dead at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital a short time later.

Watson, 31, of Worcester Avenue, was arrested at a relatives’ house on  the same night after police traced the Focus after its number plate was left at the scene.

Prosecutor, Kate Fairbun said Watson faced six charges; causing the death of Mark Batty by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision; failing to report a collision and failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Ms Fairburn said all the offences were linked to the discovery of Mr Batty in the middle of the road with serious injuries.

Representing Anton Watson, barrister, Ernie Lidster, said his client, a welder-fabricator, works full time for a local firm. He added he is father to two young children, was in a stable relationship and is supported by his family.

An application for bail was denied by District Judge Daniel Curtis who committed the case to crown court on January 6 and remanded Mr Watson in custody.

As he was led from the court he said “I love you” to relatives in the public gallery who responded by blowing kisses.

A relative of Mr Batty was also in court to hear the details.

A car which is believed to have been involved in the hit and run incident on Sutcliffe Avenue and Burwell Drive junction Sunday afternoon, was found burnt out last night on Weelsby st Grimsby.

Humberside fire service attended with Humberside police around 7.45pm to deal with the car on fire.

Fire service got the fire under control and dampened down the area around the car.

Police then contacted the council to have the debris and spillage from the road.

The car was actually set on fire right outside The Weelsby Academy school. Luckily it was the weekend and the school was closed.

Man arrested after man injured in ‘hit and run’ on the Nunsthorpe estate

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent to cause GBH following an incident in Grimsby yesterday.

A car collided with a man on a bicycle at the junction of Sutcliffe Avenue and Burwell Drive around 2pm.

The victim was left with a badly broken leg and needed hospital treatment. 

The car failed to stop. A man was later arrested and is currently in custody.

Update to Rtc on Sutcliffe ave Now believed to be hit and run

Humberside Police have now said the Rtc was a hit and run.

The incident happened around 2pm today when it’s a believed a cyclist was deliberately hit by car.

Air ambulance leaves the scene

Humberside Police have issued a statement following the alleged hit and run on Sutcliffe ave and the junction of Burwell drive.

The police spokesman said “ A man has been take to hospital following a suspected failure to stop road traffic collision on Sutcliffe Avenue.

We were called to the incident around 2pm The air ambulance was called to the incident but the man was take to the local hospital by road for treatment to a badly broken leg.

Police are now appealing for information to find a red or maroon coloured Ford Fiesta which they believe was involved in the accident and will have damage to the front wing.
